I sold my car and did not need auto insurance for more than a year. Now, I’ve purchased another car & the insurance co. won’t insure me because I had a lapse in coverage even though I did not have a car to cover?? I have a clean driving record & a valid license. What am I supposed to do? The car is paid for, but I want collision insurance. One co. offered me liability at the rate for collision!! Ridiculous!

Online you can input what you want in coverage.
Do not lie. Too many people here get denied because they fib.
Ex: If you have children (no matter what the age), tell them if they ask.

I see you have 2 teenagers. Just yesterday, someone got denied for a claim.
He was driving, his car was totaled. They found out he had a 15 year old in the car.
He lied on the application for car insurance about having children.
So…. do not lie about your teenagers. Understand?
These companies will deny any fib of any kind.

You need to contact a local independent insurance agent that can help you – and would probably do it on the phone.
Just check your local phone book for the PIA or Big I (Trusted Choice) logos and give one of them a call. You might start with your OWN agent that has your car insurance first.
